A dog named Gertie had surely been missing for the past five days when one of Gertie’s owner’s neighbors called the Cincinnati Fire Department about hearing a noise from behind a concrete wall. The noise then turned out to be coming from Gertie.
Missing dog posters were put all around their neighborhood to help find her in case anybody recognized her. Yet Gertie had managed to find her way behind a wall, which made the missing dog posters useless. She managed to squeeze behind the neighbor’s concrete garage wall and get stuck there, and the only viable way out was to use a sledgehammer and make a hole in the wall.
Firefighter Jenny Adkins got there with the needed things to free Gertie. Some heavy lifting later, she finally freed her and gently carried Gertie over to her owner. The dog started wagging her tail upon seeing her mom after five long days of being missing. The mom, of course, was just plain delighted and relieved that she was alright.
The rescue video went viral on Facebook, with the video’s caption saying that it all ended in a happy reunion with a job well done for Truck 20.
The burning question about Gertie is how did she get stuck in such a place.
Though no one has a definitive answer, Adkins said that they think Gertie may have fallen through a crack in the attic, Because they didn’t find one, they decided on going through the wall to get to her. Luckily Gertie was on the same level where they broke the wall and no one had to crawl in and retrieve her.
A lot of people praised the firefighters for responding to this call and some are even hailing Firefighter Adkins as a hero. One person commented about Gertie’s size, saying that she was bigger than what they expected, and another person commented saying that it was another great rescue from true heroes.
