The American Kennel Club releases an annual list of the most popular dog breeds based on the registry statistics that they have from the previous year. This is to show which purebred dogs have been in the most demand around the country based on their registrations to AKC.
The American Kennel Club is the largest and oldest purebred dog registry that is there to ensure the health and well-being of dogs in the US. They are the ultimate advocate for dogs and dog-owners in the country. The AKC is also the ultimate resource in everything that has to do with dogs.
One of the regular information that they provide is how popular a particular dog breed is at the moment. And for the past 28 years, the top spot has been an unbeatable streak held by Labrador Retrievers. They have beaten the 22-year streak previously held by the Poodle that ran from 1960 to 1982.

The demand for Labrador Retrievers as pets isn’t that surprising. For one thing, this breed is highly intelligent and incredibly friendly, making them perfect for households that have children. They also happen to be the top choice to use as models for several brand marketing campaigns, making them one of the most sought after animal professionals for talent agencies.
Although Labs have never been the forerunners for winning awards at Westminster Dog Shows or AKC competitions, their popularity with the general dog-loving public hasn’t faded over almost 30 years. They still remain the top dogs at being the fan-favorite followed not-so-closely by the German Shepherd.
Maybe it’s their adorable, goofy grins or the inherent kindness that these doggies possess, but they are indeed the favorite pooch to be called man’s best friend.
